According to multiple experts, Trent Smith should have been arrested for vehicular homicide on Tuesday, December 15th, 2015. Others would argue that he would have had his license suspended for causing severe injury to Jessica Chen. Instead, he got her phone number and a hot date for that Friday.
Well, let’s back up a bit. It was a snowy December afternoon in Central city. Trent Smith, a 25 year old computer programming prodigy was driving his 2016 BossMan XG1 model sports car a bit too fast down an ice slicked back road. As fate would have it, at the exact same moment, Jessica Chen, a 24 year old up and coming businesswoman was driving her 2013 EveryDude LS2 convertible down a road perpendicular to Trent’s. Just like Trent, Jessica was also driving a bit too fast for the icy conditions. Both young adults slammed their breaks a tad too late, running directly through the stop signs facing them. Before Trent could do anything, his car t-boned Jessica’s, directly smashing into the young Asian woman.
As their cars collided, time seemed to slow down to a frame by frame crawl. Trent looked on at horror as his vehicle crashed into beautiful, pale, elegant Jessica. All he could think of was how crashes of this type have a nearly 100% injury rate for the car smashed into. All he could think of was how horrible it would be to hurt such a beautiful woman. To kill such a beautiful woman. Of course, hurting anyone would be a shame, but this girl; there was something special about her. He could feel a massive pit in his stomach instantly forming. He wished and wished that this was all a nightmare, that he’d wake up with nothing more than a cold sweat.
After the initial dust from the crash settled, all Trent could do was bury his face into the airbag in front of him and cry. He would call the cops soon, but for now, he needed to cry. Aside from his love life, everything was going exceptionally well for him. While most kids graduate college without any clue what to do, Trent was immediately recruited into a company that would be rightfully heralded as the next FaceSpace. With his unique blend of creativity and top-tier programming skills, Trent quickly climbed the programming ranks, taking charge of bigger and bigger projects. At the relatively young age of 25, only 3 years after graduating college, he was already taking in $155,000 a year, and was expecting a raise in the next year or two. His affluence, combined with above average looks and height of 5’11” would allow him to easily win over almost any girl (or guy). Unfortunately, nobody had ever sparked a flame in his heart.
As he sat there, face buried into the airbag, life flashing before his eyes, he heard a knocking on his window. He looked up, and to his shock (and delight) saw the beautiful face he thought he maimed. Flabbergasted, he managed to quickly wipe away his tears, open the door to his car and climb out.
“I am SO SO sorry” he started to stammer out. He looked down at her, she was over a foot shorter than him; yet, took his breath away. For the first time since he was a freshmen in college, he felt butterflies in his stomach.
“It’s okay, I’m not injured at all.” she responded smiling. “In fact I feel full of life! Kind of crazy, huh?”
“Yeah…” he responded dazedly.
“So… I guess we call the cops?” she asked, unsure what to do in this situation.
“Yeah… yeah…” he started to take out his UberPhone 5.0 to make the emergency call. “Oh!” He interrupted himself “I’ll cover everything your insurance doesn’t? Ok?”
Jessica smiled a bit broader “Hey, this is technically both our faults, so no need for that!”
Trent shook his head “No, no. Trust me, not to brag, but I can afford it. Plus I smashed into you… you could be dead right now!” he started to dial 911. After informing the authorities, he put his phone away and let out a big sigh. “Oh, uh, I’m Trent, nice to meet you” he extended his hand to the girl.
The Asian giggled a bit and shook his hand. “I’m Jessica, nice to meet you, even if it was under such odd circumstances.” Trent seemed like a really sweet guy. Not to mention he wasn’t bad looking, and had one hell of a nice car.
“Heh, yeah.” Trent responded. He felt… nervous. He was so used to girls swooning over him for the past year or so that it was almost surreal meeting someone that had this affect on him.
“So, uhh, are you single?” she asked, her snow-white face turning a shade pinker.
“Yeah, I am.” Trent responded, nervously scratching the back of his head. “And you?”
“Yeah!” her face grew a bit pinker. Was this guy not into her, or just kind of nervous? Only one way to find out. “Uhhm, how about you take me to dinner on Friday, and then we can figure out the money stuff?”
“Sounds good!” Trent blurted out. “Uhh. Is this like, a date?” Now his face was red as well.
“Yes?” Jessica looked down at the ground. “I mean, if you want it to be!”
“Yeah, I do.” Trent lightly kicked the ground out of nervous habit. “Sorry if I’m kind of out of it, this is just… surreal, ya’know?”
“Hey, it’s okay. Let’s have a good time on Friday?” she asked, looking up with a grin.
“Of course.” Trent grinned back.
The two exchanged phone numbers just as the police and tow trucks arrived. After filling out some paperwork, they established that nobody was injured, and that both parties were equally responsible. Trent stuffed $200 cash into Jessica’s hand (which she tried to refuse) to help pay for a rental car during repairs. They hugged before Jessica jumped into a cab and Trent walked home, needing to clear out his head.
Later that evening, in the comfort of his own home, Trent examined himself in the mirror thoroughly. He wasn’t in particularly bad shape, but it was nothing to brag about. While his bodyfat percentage was fairly low, he lacked the powerful and defined body that the guys in magazines boasted. For the past few years, Trent hadn’t really worried about his physical shape; no girls really caught his eye. Jessica was different however. While he feared she only wanted to date him due to his car (which had an estimated retail value of $88,000 new) he still wanted to impress her if she saw him nude. Before going to sleep for the night, Trent decided that starting tomorrow, he was going to start working out and get into shape.
Work went by painfully slow for Trent the next day. While his job wasn’t particularly exciting to begin with, he usually enjoyed himself enough that it wasn’t too painful. Today however, his thoughts were consumed with Jessica. When should he call her? Was she going to call him? Where was he going to take her? What should he wear? What was she going to wear? He didn’t want to out-dress her or look like a slob next to her. How was he going to get ripped before she undressed him? Was that going to ever happen? Would it happen that night? The third date? Would she even care how he looked either way?
Finally his work day came to a close and he headed towards the closest Central City MegaGym. He signed up with a personal trainer and got started right away. His lifts were all around average, and his trainer was confident that with consistent sessions and proper diet, Trent could be looking great within a month or so. A month may be too long before things got intimate, but he could always impress her with his progress as things moved along.
Wednesday went by almost the same, except Trent was fairly sore the whole day. Not feeling up to working already sore muscles, he stuck to cardio at the gym. That evening he finally worked up the courage to call Jessica and after much insistence from Trent, the two decided to go to a high end Italian place that Friday.
Thursday seemed to crawl even more slowly than the previous two days. Trent was obsessed over this girl, going as far as to look her up on FaceSpace and Google searching her name multiple times. He didn’t dig too deep however; he respected her privacy and needed to satiate his curiosity. As with Wednesday his muscles were extremely sore, so he simply performed cardio at the gym
Friday at work proved that Thursday had not moved as slowly as possible. Trent barely got any work done as he went over in his head how his date was going to go. Not wanting to risk any possibilities of being late, Trent skipped going to the gym altogether.
Trent arrived at the restaurant first and was escorted to his reserved seat. After what felt like a short eternity, Jessica finally arrived. She was wearing a classic black dress that contrasted nicely with her pale skin and revealed some surprisingly toned, albeit thin arms and calves. Trent quickly got up to greet her, and the two embraced in a quick hug. The Asian smiled and apologized for arriving a little late, which Trent quickly forgave.
“Wow, you look great! Especially for someone who just had their car smashed into a few days ago” Trent smiled, complimented the girl, trying to keep the mood light and cheerful despite his nervousness. He couldn’t help but notice that her shoulders were surprisingly round for a girl of such thin build. Trent always was a fan of girls that had some muscle on them, it looked great, though he wasn’t too sure how he’d feel if a girl were stronger than himself.
Jessica returned the smile “Thanks! You’re looking sharp yourself!” she said, admiring his classic three piece suit.
Trent couldn’t quite put his finger on it, but there was something different about her. She seemed… taller. Maybe it was heels? No, she wasn’t wearing any. She looked damn good when they met, but she seemed slightly… more so tonight. “Tell me, what’s the secret? You definitely were a bit shorter than I met you”
The Asian grinned at the question, her pearly white teeth showing. “Well…” she hushed her voice so it was just audible to Trent “this is gonna sound crazy, but you have to believe me…”
Trent nodded
“After the car crash, I grew 2 inches! I’m finally 5 feet tall now. I feel like an actual adult!” she laughed at her final statement.
“Oh wow, car crashes can do that?” Trent asked, curious.
“Hmm. Not normally, but ever since that Kelly girl took the world by storm at the Olympics a few years ago, doctors are more open to anything. Their theory is the shock of the car crash caused the release of some latent growth hormones in that never quite came out during puberty.”
“That’s great!” Trent exclaimed enthusiastically
“Yeah! I do wish I was even taller though. Maybe like 5’7″, ya know?”
Trent nodded, understandingly.
“So… tell me about yourself. What do you like to do?” he asked, genuinely curious about the girl.
“Well…” Jessica giggled a bit “This is going to sound soo stereotypical, but, I’ve been pretty big into martial arts the past couple years”
“Cool! Were you pressured by your parents to do it or…?” Trent quickly caught himself “Oh shit, I hope that didn’t seem racist” he blushed a bit.
Jessica laughed again. “Don’t worry about it. The truth is I’m doing it to spite my parents. Growing up my elder brother of one year was encouraged to do all these different martial arts. He has black belts in tons of forms and won a bunch of tournaments”
“Oh wow..”
“Yeah. I always asked if I could learn to fight as well, but my parents insisted that only men should fight. That only men should be strong. That women need to be subservient and submissive…” The happiness in Jessica’s face had vanished
“So you’re taking martial arts to get back at them?”
“Well, at first it was. But I eventually fell in love with it. Though…” she frowned a bit “I’m not really progressing as fast as my brother ever did. I doubt I can ever catch up to him. I even tried lifting weights to build up my body, but it didn’t really do anything.”
“Coulda fooled me, look at your shoulders!” Trent exclaimed, trying to cheer the girl up.
Jessica smiled “You like these?”
Trent nodded enthusiastically.
“Well… to be honest I never had them until the accident. I never had any of these..” she showed off her small but defined tricep. “If anything I should be thanking you for whatever that accident did to me. I just wish that I could catch up, or even surpass my brother. It’s just that he’s been training for 20 years already, plus he’s a guy.”
With that, the waiter finally came over and they ordered their meals. Trent was surprised to see Jessica get as much food as he did; she simply called herself a growing girl and gave him a wink. Soon the topic shifted to the accident. Trent explained that both of their cars were being taken care of the best mechanics around, and would be repaired by Monday. Jessica tried to insist that she pay for her own repair bill, but Trent was unyielding. Eventually the two settled on having a second date to further discuss this. Before Jessica could do anything, Trent grabbed the bill and paid in full cash, with a large tip as well. As they left the restaurant, he offered to walk the girl home as opposed to taking a cab, and she happily accepted.
It was a chilly December evening and Jessica hadn’t thought of bringing a coat. As a result, she cuddled extra close to Trent for warmth, which he didn’t object to. The two were almost comical side by side due to him standing nearly an entire foot taller than her. After a few blocks their path brought them down some back alleys away from the street. That’s when it happened.
“Hands up, give me your wallet richboy!” A rugged looking man standing about 5’9″ was standing in their way with a large knife in hand.
“Wow, easy there fella” Trent slowly and very obviously took his wallet out to calm the mugger down. He figured there was only sixty bucks in there after paying for that meal, and he’d just cancel all the cards as soon as he got home. Better to part with some cash than risk anyone getting hurt, especially with Jessica here. Not to mention a guy like this could probably really use the money. But most of all, Trent just didn’t want Jessica to get hurt
Just then his train of thought was broken as Jessica cried out and lunged forward. Trent tried to react and stop her, but it was too late. He felt horrified at what might happen to her, he felt his stomach churning inside out. Instead of something terrible happening, the girl deftly kicked the knife out of the mugger’s hand and tackled him to the ground. She proceeded to punch him a few times in the face for emphasis. After feeling satisfied she got up and kicked him the side. The beaten man crawled to his knees and quickly ran off, shouting “You’ll pay for this bitch!”
“Holy shit Jessica!” He shouted, running over to her. “That was amazing! You’re like a super hero!” Trent was ecstatic, like a child in a comic watching a hero defeat a villain.
“I… just felt this rush of energy and went for it…” she seemed speechless. “In fact, I still feel really pumped up” she flexed her right arm and a small bulge that never existed before rose up. “Oh god… I really must be growing from being shocked!” she was bursting with excitement.
The two practically ran back to Jessica’s apartment and she eagerly invited him in. That night was the greatest to date in Trent’s 25 year old life.
To be continued…
