Version 1.0
Approximately 10,600 words
1.) The Power Company Labs – Friday.
“So… the vibrations are materializing AS new muscle fibers?” Virginia said, staring at the model on the screen. It was displaying a female rat’s innards in real time.
Linus nodded. “Kind of… It’s more like, the vibrations are simultaneously signaling the body to build muscle, while also manifesting themselves as energy to develop the muscle with. And they’re also somehow compelling the muscle to grow nearly instantaneously.”
“Right. And this is all directed by your adaptive-AI system?” The 31-year-old woman asked.
He nodded again, “The adaptive-AI is intentionally directing the Vibro-Nutrients toward their current task, which is to better suit the subject’s body to the task it just completed.”
The rat’s legs were looking seriously beefy for a rodent. She jumped back onto her running wheel and started sprinting with no reserve, as if she hadn’t just run to exhaustion a few moments ago.
Virginia scrawled some notes on her clipboard, her mind trying to take in the full suite of implications this discovery could yield.
A couple of awkward minutes passed, and the rat finally got off. Linux activated the process again, and once more the rat’s legs became denser and larger. It jumped back on the wheel and proceeded again, faster and more determined than last time.
“This is unfuckingbelievable.” Virginia said under her breath.
“It’s just the beginning. This thing works on people. Well, women at least. Still can’t get the male rats to respond. But who knows, maybe male humans can benefit from it?”
In truth, the Vibro-Nutrients were initially theorized by Virginia, but they required so much precise calibration that she could never get them to have any tangible benefit. Linus’s adaptive-AI however was able to perfectly tune them to a wide variety of tasks; such as helping a rat become jacked.
–
Virginia was a success story so stock-standard that many replied with doubt when they first heard it. She grew up in an impoverished neighborhood, and found recluse from the chaos in her personal life through studying for school. The mechanisms of science provided a consistency that contrasted with the uncertainty of other people; and Virginia poured herself into every textbook she could from a young age. A few impressive finishes at local science fairs (despite her lack of funds), nearly straight-As, and some key scholarships landed her at college. While her peers skipped class and did the bare minimum, Virginia retained her work ethic, and she quickly became one of the university’s top science majors. Eager to stay away from home, Virginia spent her summers at out-of-state internships where she impressed almost everyone she came across.
Linus was no slouch himself. While he hadn’t faced the nearly as much adversity as Virginia did, and his work ethic wasn’t quite as strong, he was a brilliant programmer nonetheless. He was particularly enthralled by AI systems – computers that could think for themselves. The adaptive-AI system was almost entirely created by him while he was on the clock, and as a result was firmly under the ownership of The Power Company.
Almost everything came effortlessly to Linus. While Virginia had to toil away to further her scientific knowledge, Linus could learn things at a far more rapid pace. This caused some tension between the two, as Virginia would often show him the fruits of months of research, and Linus would understand it within a week. Still, now that her abstract—and laughed at—concept of vibrations being utilized as energy was now a reality, she could easily overlook her past transgressions with Linus. If anything, she was finding his powerful mind to be increasingly sexy by the moment.
The Power Company… truth be told, was a shady sports-nutrition firm that was mostly unremarkable. They negligently tossed large amounts of money into R&D, hiring researchers like Virginia and Linus, but always ended up releasing supplements that merely combined various natural herbs and amino acids, and resold them at an outrageous markup.
Linus’s adaptive-AI system had been working months ago, but The Power Company’s management was too inept to understand the extent of the breakthrough’s importance. This troubled the 33-year-old to no end, as he knew that this invention could quite literally change the course of human history. It could be told to do a vast number of tasks, and it would eventually learn to complete them better than almost any human could hope to. And yet it was thoroughly under lock and key.
–
“I… I need you to test it on me.” Virginia said, with a fire in her chocolate brown eyes.
“I understand how exciting this is, but our asses will be grass if we jump to human trial like that…”
Virginia looked away. She knew he was right, but her life was literally at stake. She wanted to tell him the truth—the full truth—of why she desperately needed to use the Vibro-Nutrients as soon as possible, and not just for vanity’s sake. But she feared that they were likely being bugged by management. At the very least they were under video surveillance.
“Bring a backup to your place and do some unpaid work on it. Ok?” Virginia said.
“What?”
She gave him a pleading look, and he understood this was important.
“Oh!” He said, hamming it up, “Alright, sure, yeah. Good call Virginia! Teamwork!”
–
The rest of the work day was agonizingly slow for both of them; even more so than a usual Friday.
2.) Later That Evening – Linus’s Apartment
Linus stared at the text and rolled his eyes. Did Virginia really think that after paying him little mind for years that she was going to suddenly seduce him into giving her a ripped body? Still, Virginia was pretty cute, and he had been single for… an embarrassingly long time. Maybe he could use this to his advantage: give her a nice toned body, and finally get some sugar for himself. He’d have to be careful though, or else she’d simply walk out and use his gifts to seduce someone else!
–
An hour later Virginia knocked at his door. She was dressed in casual clothing, which were significantly more appealing than her usual lab coat. Still, Virginia wasn’t a 10/10 or even a 9/10, as years toiling away in research labs had taken their toll on her body, which was fairly slender, but by no means athletic.
They exchanged greetings and Linus prepared some coffee for her. Before long, she stopped beating around the bush: “Linus. I need to see if the Vibro-Nutrients will work on me. It’s a matter of life and death.”
Linus choked a bit on his beverage. After coughing and collecting himself, he replied: “Life and death? Really? Getting toned without a lot of effort doesn’t seem that important to me.”
“No, Linus…” Virginia bit her large, dark lower lip, and turned her gaze away. How would she explain this without sounding melodramatic? It didn’t matter – she had to go for it, “Linus. I have sickle cell.”
Linus’s eyes grew wide, and he dropped his cup – coffee splattering everywhere. “Virg… are… are you serious?”
She nodded. “We can use your equipment if you want proof.”
A sweat broke out on his forehead. All along he thought she selfishly wanted to use his adaptive-AI to give herself a killer body; but her aspirations were far less shallow than that. “Why… why don’t I know this?”
“I’ve… I’ve been keeping it secret.” Virginia admitted. “Part of the Vibro-Nutrient project was me trying desperately to think outside the box of how to cure it.”
The story was sounding more plausible by the moment. He bit his lower lip, thoughts flurried through his mind. Was this a trick? It didn’t really matter – he had instruments that would quickly discern whether she was telling the truth or not. It was best to act as if she were sincere.
“Well, we need to make sure that it works on humans in the first place.” Linus said. “The Vibro-Nutrient emitter that is.”
Virginia nodded. “I’ve always been a little bossy around you, always trying to keep you within scientific protocol… But this time Linus, you’re in charge, alright? My life is in your hands. Just tell me what we need to do.”
Linus’s stomach churned, so much responsibility had just been thrust into his hands. Not only was Virginia’s life at stake, but the future of adaptive-AI and Vibro-Nutrients also lay in the balance. “Right.” He nodded, gaining composure. “I think the test that would make the most sense would be to run the same thing we did on the rats. Just… calibrated for humans of course.” He explained.
Virginia nodded again, “Makes sense.”
“We need to create tears in your muscles so the Vibro-Nutrients can repair them.
“So I need to work out?”
He nodded. “But we should keep it small scale. Just exercise like one or two muscle groups.”
“Alright.” Virginia took her sweater off, revealing a tank-top that let her dark arms breath free. They looked soft and smooth – one of the benefits of her African heritage was that her skin aged much more gracefully than most of her colleagues’.
“Ah… well if you’re sleeveless, let’s work your arms a little. It’ll be easier to see the results.” Linus said.
“Good idea. What should I do?”
Linus shuffled around his cabinets, “Hmm… Do you lift? Do you know how strong you are?”
“I don’t, so I’m probably pretty weak.” Virginia admitted.
“Alright.” Linus quickly put a bunch of canned goods into a grocery bag. “This should weigh roughly fifteen pounds.” He said, putting it on the ground in front of her. “Just curl it like a makeshift dumbbell.”
Virginia nodded. She struggled, but slowly lifted the bags a few times, her small arms pumping up slightly in the process. While she did this, Linus turned on his laptop—which was connected to the handheld Vibro-Nutrient emitter—and started to program the adaptive AI. In truth, he didn’t have to change much from its previous setting: he merely had to change it from ‘rat’ to ‘human’, two species that were actually quite close in genetic structure.
–
Virginia had worked up a small sweat, and at last the moment of truth came. Linus powered the emitter on, held it up to her arms, and turned it on. A wave of Vibro-Nutrients made their way into Virginia’s limbs, and just as they had with the mice, began to work their magic. Virginia was surprised by the sensation the rays incurred, prompting her to let out a soft groan. Then right before their very eyes, her biceps began to tremble a bit before transforming slightly. They were firmer, and a bit shapelier. Still small and relatively soft, but noticeably more athletic than before.
“I can’t believe this is actually happening…” Virginia said, staring down at her arms, feeling her small, recently-formed muscles.
“Really? We both know the science is real.” Linus replied coolly, “Though seeing it on a human being is a bit surreal I suppose.”
“So… so what now?” Virginia asked, her voice quivering with excitement.
“I run some scans on you, draw some blood samples, crunch some data, then hope that Vibro-Nutrients can cure diseases.” Linus explained.
–
First came the basics. The bio-reader stated:
– – –
Subject: Virginia
Height: 5’5”
Weight: 132
Body fat: 27%
Resting Heartrate: 78
– – –
Next it confirmed her claims: a positive test for sickle-cell. Linus knew that everything was on the line, and worked accordingly.
–
The process took a couple of hours, which felt like an eternity to Virginia. At last the moment of truth came. Linus activated the emitter, which had been given explicit instructions to cure all underlying ailments in Virginia’s body.
The results came back. “You’re cured.” Linus said sincerely. “Not just completely cured, but your body as a whole is better armed against disease in general. And if anything else rears its ugly head, we have the tools to stop it entirely now.” He added with a warm smile.
“Linus I just…” tears were welling in Virginia’s eyes. She thrust her arms around Linus, burying her head into his chest, heaving deep sobs of joy.
Suddenly, she reached up and planted a kiss on his lips.
Despite his scientific prowess, Linus was far from smooth with the ladies, and his face flushed red with embarrassment.
“Too far?” Virginia asked.
“No.” Linus replied, grabbing onto the back of her head and returning the gesture with a kiss of his own.
Linus had always found Virginia to be attractive, and the reverse was true as well. In the privacy of his apartment, and the advent of the wonderful news, they found ample reason to cut loose and express their true feelings for one another with a series of impassioned kisses.
–
They sat on Linus’s couch, Virginia’s head resting on his shoulder. Virginia was still elated, and she had been discussing all of the different ways that their invention could change mankind. “We can just create vibrations that counteract the influenza itself.” She said during one of her musings.
“Right. Still Virginia… I’m not sure if we should. We’ve already done a lot. Way more than ethics allow.”
“Ethics? Ethics are why we should continue, Linus.”
“What?”
“The ethical thing to do is to figure out as quickly as possible if this invention can save lives.” Virginia explained, passion returning to her voice. “In fact, we should be experimenting on me right now.”
“That’s true… But we can’t risk you dying in the process…”
“I was going to die Linus. I was already living on borrowed time. My disease is cured, and as far as I can tell my life is better than ever. Arms are a bit more toned at the very least.”
“Right – that’s why we should stop now. We’ve already found a miracle cure, AND your life is saved. It would be reckless to let you come close to death again.”
Virginia shook her head, “I understand what you’re saying Linus, but I view life as if I had already died. As such, it’s my duty to make sure that I push mankind’s ability to fight the diseases that plague us to its fullest.”
“Virginia… That’s very admirable, but there’s a lot of logical fallacies involved in that train of thought.”
“I don’t care Linus. One way or another I’m going to do those tests. You can help me, which will make the process much smoother, and probably safer – or you can choose not to.”
Before Linus could reply, his cell phone began to ring. “Thought I turned this stupid thing off…” he muttered, getting up and answering it.
–
Ten minutes later.
–
“Virginia… don’t panic, but I’m not sure if it’s safe here.” Linus said with an entirely serious tone.
“Not safe?!”
“I just got a call from Jim… apparently The Power Company is calling around asking where the emitter prototype is.”
“The suits finally care?”
Linus nodded. “And once they’re smart enough to just… check the lab logs, they’ll realize that it’s here.”
“What… do you think is going to happen?” Virginia felt like she was suddenly starring in a Hollywood thriller.
“I’m really not sure.” Linus admitted. “I guess they could come here and try to seize the emitter. Or not, hard to tell.”
“Mmm… kind of thrilling. Maybe we should make a daring escape to a hotel room?” Virginia offered.
Linus had a half-dozen possible objections, but then it quickly dawned on him: this was definitely his ticket to a romantic night with Virginia; and not just any Virginia, but a constantly improving one.
“Alright.” He agreed before packing some things.
3.) Ninety Minutes Later – Downtown Hotel
Their room was small, and only had one bed. This was actually Virginia’s suggestion, to which Linus had no objection. Linus began to unpack the few things he brought – which were just a change of clothes, his laptop, and of course – the Vibro-Nutrient Emitter – which was also modified to perform body scans as well.
Before arriving, they quickly stopped by Virginia’s place so she could also grab some clothing.
Back in the room, after getting comfortable, Virginia stripped down to her undergarments. “All that time in the lab hasn’t been so kind to my body.” Virginia said, looking down at her exposed body.
“I’m no Adonis myself.” Linus offered.
“Mmm… That may be true, but it’d take you a very long time to make changes in your body. But me on the other hand, I don’t have that excuse…” Virginia said, eying over the emitter.
“Virginia…”
“But what if I…” She got down on the ground and started to perform V-situps, the pudge around her midsection bunching up unfavorably with each repetition. She quickly drew short on breath, and before long her core quivered from effort. She then transitioned into regular sit ups, tilting to the side with each ascent to work her obliques. Like the first exercise, it didn’t take many repetitions for Virginia to run out of energy, and for her muscles to become fatigued. Eager to ensure that her abs were properly challenged, she got onto her elbows into a planking position, holding it for a short while before collapsing onto the ground.
Panting, she said, “Alright baby, let’s see your adaptive-AI work its magic!”
Linus gulped, and considered refusing, but he also had a vested interest in seeing what would happen. His fingers flew across his laptop’s keyboard, calibrating the machine to help Virginia with whatever exercises she had performed. Next he transferred the instructions to the emitter, powered it up, and held it up to her torso before firing.
Virginia let out a soft groan of pleasure as the rays worked their magic. They were simultaneously destroying the excess fat, which the programming deemed a hindrance to her ab work, and simultaneously rebuilt the recently torn muscles in her core. The small pouches of pudge around her midsection had all but evaporated. Beneath them lay firm, shapely muscles that appeared even more defined underneath her dark skin.
She stood up and took stock of her new stomach, running her fingers along it, a childlike glee in her eyes. Virginia couldn’t believe that this was her. And it didn’t take hours in the gym on a consistent basis, nor careful dieting. All she had to do was a short workout, then power up the Vibro-Nutrient emitter. In a mere few minutes, she reaped the fruits of what should have been months of labor.
And Virginia felt hot. Her self-confidence was surging, and she actually had more energy in general to spare. She strutted up to Linus and intentionally rolled her midsection a bit, showing off the recent developments.
“Oh come on Linus, stop being so damn shy.” Virginia purred, holding onto his hand and placing it on her midsection. She could immediately sense that he liked it. A lot. “You ever been with a girl with a belly like this?” She asked.
Linus shook his head.
“What do you like most about it?” Virginia asked.
“It’s… both smooth and… hard. I mean, that’s obvious, but. Wow, actually feeling it is something else.” Linus admitted, his face turning red.
“Whadya think Linus, would it be hotter if it was more ripped?”
“Ummm…”
“I mean, I know not every guy likes them, but girls with muscle are becoming pretty mainstream, aren’t they? Wouldn’t I look better with a legitimate six pack? Not like you’re going to insult me by admitting it since we have, you know…”
“Yeah, I guess, that would be pretty damn hot.” He admitted.
“It’s settled then.” She said with a wink before getting back on the ground and performing more V-situps. This time the burgeoning network of abdominal muscles performed a dazzling display, and the motion was far easier than she recalled. Virginia was able to perform more than twice as many repetitions as she had last time. She was inspired to try some more advanced moves: reverse crunches, bicycle kicks, and a longer plank than last time.
Too eager to wait for Linus, Virginia grabbed onto the emitter herself and powered it up, holding it close to her torso. The sensation was even greater than last time, and she found herself unexpectedly close to orgasm from the pleasure.
The lines had thickened, the outline of her underlying abs grew a bit more visible. While she didn’t have a ‘six-pack’ yet, her Adonis belt grew pronounced, and flattering obliques complimented her torso. Virginia casually crunched her midsection downward, which a discernible four-pack to emerge.
“I’ve got a pretty sweet belly now, but my arms and legs are still kinda… 31-year-old scientist.” Virginia said before falling to the floor and getting into a push up position. Despite her gusto, Virginia was only capable of performing a small number of push-ups with proper form before reverting to using her knees to help her. Even with that aid, the task was still difficult for her; the underdeveloped muscles in her chest and triceps pumped up slightly in the process.
“Ugh, so weak!” Virginia said after catching her breath. “Any recommendations for exercises even I can do?”
“You could do a couple of tricep dips on the chair over there.” Linus said, pointing to the furniture in question.
Virginia nodded and walked over. She got into position and with a great deal of difficulty managed to complete a few repetitions before her arms gave out.
This time it was Linus who was eager to see what changes would come. While Virginia panted on the floor, he started the emitter and held it to her upper body. She let out another groan, and physically placed her hands on her arms, eager to feel the transformation first hand. The muscles beneath her grasp shifted to and fro as the Vibro-Nutrients materialized into actual flesh; the thin veneer of fat, mostly on her triceps, melted away, and she could feel a very early outline of a horseshoe-shaped muscle come forward.
“There, no more early bingo wings!” Virginia cheered with a toothy grin. She playfully flexed her arms, and a small collection of powerful tendons sprang to life underneath her skin; a small, ripped chestnut of a bicep emerged from the center.
“Now to get these legs back into shape, and build up the butt.” She said before taking a wide stance with her legs, placing her hands forward, and proceeding to squat. Reaching down low was harder than she anticipated, and she let out a soft grunt with each descent. Linus waited in anticipation, wondering what his new lover would look like with muscular thighs and a rounder butt.
He didn’t have to wait for long. After 30 repetitions, she was physically spent, and collapsed onto the ground. Linus walked over with the charged emitter and activated it. Her stems quickly became shapelier and more visibly ripped; and looked like they belonged to a relatively athletic teenage girl. Virginia was a little disappointed, as she desired massive power packed thighs, but was still happy for the time being: further results could be built later.
She leapt back onto her feet, “A funny side effect is that I feel totally reinvigorated.” Virginia noted, performing a couple of squats for emphasis, “It’s like there’s no lactic build up in my muscles, and my energy levels are actually higher. Very convenient if someone were to perform multiple exercises in a row.”
Linus nodded, taking mental notes.
“I bet my back’s still a little unimpressive, huh?” Virginia asked, trying to crane her neck over her shoulder to peak a glance.
“Well…”
“Linus, remember to just play it straight from now on – we can literally build my body up in moments.”
“Right. Yeah, it’s pretty weak compared to the rest.”
Virginia nodded. “I don’t think I can manage to do any pull ups though…” She said, stroking her chin.
“Well, you could do assisted ones. I’ll hold you while you grab onto the bathroom door frame over there.” Linus suggested.
Virginia’s eyes lit up “You’re a genius Linus!” she exclaimed.
“I literally invented the most cutting edge AI system to date… but I guess this qualifies me as one as well.” Linus snarkily replied.
